Meet the Artist- Janie Layers

Where am I from? I grew up in the woods of western Washington.  Among these rain soaked Evergreens I became an artist, and at the ever- Green State College I graduated in Fine Arts.  Moving to northern Arizona in 1998 I opened a fresh visual horizon that has pushed me to capture images in clay.  The Verde Valley’s high desert climate with a red rock backdrop provides ample inspiration to hand-build these pieces.

How are my sculptures made?  I use individual coils of clay.  Placed one upon the other and built up in a hollow form like pinch-pot.  I work slowly without armatures so the strength of the clay and engineering of the form enhances stability throughout the building process.  These pieces are then individually placed into a kiln to dry, and are fired at a very high temperature for durability.  Once allowed to cool they are then painted with layers of color.

Why do I create these pieces?  I sculpt to reach inside the person viewing them to connect through the encounter of seeing and feeling.  Please feel free to touch my work.  These sculptures, while tracing the wonder in a moment of one’s life, transcend it like all pure art and become part of our earthly experience.

Where do I work?  My studio is located in the Old Jerome High School (Home of the Muckers).  This former booming copper town with ramshackle appeal has become an art haven.  I occupy an old classroom on the main floor with original slate blackboards.  There are nearly 20 other artists in this historic building who create an impressive collection of original art.  Open to the public.
