Meet the Artists- Rita Elkins & Teal Sullivan

Rita Elkins & Teal Sullivan

Rita arrived in the Verde Valley of Arizona in 2000 and now considers herself as having spent 22 years at serious art endeavor, in Maryland, England, the Pacific Northwest and now the Southwest. Her love for color, texture, and landscape surpasses, only marginally, her interest in people and the challenge of new subjects and media.

Rita is a juried artist of the Sedona Art Center, Sedona, Arizona. The prestigious Pinon Bistro Restaurant in Cottonwood fill their walls with Rita's works in one-artist engagements for the enjoyment of their diners. Her next commitment to this venue is Jan 2011.

Aside from a business degree from the University of Maryland, Rita studied oil painting at Gloucester College of Art & Design in Cheltenham, England; oil painting at Arapahoe Community College in Littleton, CO; drawing at Howard Community College in Columbia, MD; and water media and computer-generated art at the Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore, MD. Rita also continues to take art workshops with nationally recognized artists in a variety of two-dimensional media. In May 2010 she travelled to Tuscany for a two-week oil painting excursion with Clive Pates, after four semesters with this noted British instructor from Yavapai College.
Rita has co-directed a gallery, taught pastel and watercolor workshops and was art docent to third graders for a couple of years.

Among numerous ribbons and awards, Rita has just won a juried pastel scholarship from the International Artists Pastel Society to be taken in Nov 2010 in Napa Valley. She won First Place in 2002 at the Arizona State Fair for a pastel, and won "Best in Show" two years in a row (2003 and 2004) for landscapes in juried competitions in Cottonwood, as well as First Place in 2003 for another landscape in a juried competition in Glendale, AZ. In 2005 her work was accepted in an international competition for exhibition in Raleigh, NC. She is President of the EI Valle Artists Association and a Signature Member of the Arizona Artists Pastel Association and the Northern Arizona Watercolor Society.

Rita and her husband Steve live in Cornville with their cat Olympia. You may view more of her work at www.showup.com (keyword search: Artists Profiles) or http://nawsaz.org/elkins.

Teal Sullivan

Teal Sullivan of Higher Road Designs is a designer and Artist of unique symbolic wire, sculpture, and wearable art.

Symbolism is a magic language that flows like rivers through our lives and the history of our cultures.  By tapping into the meanings of symbols, we gain understanding in the realms of philosophy, cultural history, inner awareness, personal identity, and collective community.  Incorporation our own personal emblems into our lives serves us in areas of self-discovery and self-expression.

Teal’s interest in ancient cultures and symbols inspres her to bring symbols alive with meaning.  She utilizes copper wire, custom stones, gemstones and glass beads, feathers, leather bark fiber and various organic materials, and polymer clay.

My specialty is creating custom symbolic wire sculptures that include an accompanied ‘Artist Expression’, a tour through the meanings of the art.

I bring experience and skills in fiber arts, woodworking, lapidary arts, wire-wrap jewelry making, and enjoy applying multi-media into creating a truly unique one of a kind artful experience.

Teal is pleased to be a member of the following Verde Valley organizations: El Valle Artists Association, Made in Clarkdale, Clarkdale Chamber of Commerce
