Meet the Artist- Mark Hemleben

"I want people to wander inside my paintings and become captivated by something that makes them more aware of their surroundings."

Mark Hemleben brings to the tradition ofPlein Air Painting an evocation ofmagic and community -that feeling that bonds people to place, weather it is the stillnes and majesty ofwilderness or the charm and character of small towns.

Hemleben, born in Lafayette, LA in 1961, knew his calling as an artist at a very early age and was encouraged by his family. His education in fine arts and history at University ofLousiana gave him the tools to appreciate the look ofa place and understand its special energy. A stint in the Marines taught him to focus for long periods oftime on a solitary endeavor. Painting for a large mural company 10 hours a day taught him the necessity for discipline and hard work. Living amoung other artists -the Santa Ana Artists Colony in the mid-nineties and in the town ofJerome where artists represent 25% ofthe town's population -gave him the confidence to express his individuality and made him feel valued in the community.

For Hemleben, being an artist means making it his life's work. Painting on location every day that the weather permits, connects his eye, hands and heart strongly with the scene he has chosen. His dynamic, recognizable and hypnotic style attests to the maturity ofhis vision and skill. His original oil paintings are represented in galleries in California, Arizona New Mexico, and Lousianna.
