Debbie Gallagher was born on the Turtle Mountain Indian Reservation in Belcourt, North Dakota. In 1970 she graduated from the University of Portland with a bachelor's degree in fine art.
In 2007 she retired from 27 years as an elementary school teacher. In the mid 1990's she rediscovered her joy of painting watercolors and incorporates many of her experiences with American Indian culture into her art work. Debbie uses a multi layering technique with rich bold colors and her paintings depart from a more traditional style to create unique, eye-catching landscapes, still lifes, and portraits. She is a signature member of the Northern Arizona Watercolor Society and her work has won awards and recognition.
Vada has loved creating all of her life. She started at her mother's side with coloring books learning to shade and stay within the lines. Now her greatest joy, as an artist, is to spend the day in her studio playing and experimenting with paint, paper, found objects and textures.
She has a B.A. in Education and was a teacher for 30 years in Northern California. While teaching she took night classes at Santa Rosa Junior College majoring in art. Her work has been accepted in various shows and galleries in Northern California and the Verde Valley, and is in private collections around the world.
In addition to her love of painting, Vada is involved in various volunteer activities in the Verde Valley. In 1999, she was a featured artist at the Fort Verde Days celebration and was the featured artist in action at the Palm Springs Art Museums in February of 2006. In 2009, She was once again honored to be the featured artist at Camp Verde's Fort Verde Days celebration, held every October.
Vada occasionally teaches painting and has hung and judged shows for various organizations.
She is juried member, and past president, of the Northern Arizona Watercolor Society. She is also a member of the El Valle Artists Association, and the Artisans Guild of Camp Verde.
