Get to Know the Artist - Kyla Allen
Kyla Allen has been delving into the world of art beginning at the age of three, when she and her identical twin sister picked up their crayons and created a world of magic on their bedroom wall.
Though born in California, Kyla considers herself an Arizonan, having lived in the Verde Valley for the last quarter century. She began working on her Art degree at Fullerton College in California and found her life changed course when she married and began a family. Having grown up in the urban jungle of Los Angeles and Orange County, she was excited and apprehensive when she had the opportunity to move to the, then, tiny town of Cottonwood. After all, it didn’t have a mall, where would she shop? Now Cottonwood is almost too big for her!
Never giving up her love of art, she participated in exhibits in California and Arizona while maintaining a full-time job and raising her six children. With most of the children now grown, she has been able to dedicate herself more fully to her first love.
When asked what she paints, her response is “The world is my canvas.” With her most used mediums being graphite, ink and acrylics, she loves the challenge of painting on whatever comes within reach. She has painted detailed abstract designs on buffalo skulls, sea turtles on taramuhara drums, dancing kachinas on rabbit hides, cougars on agate, and enchanting medicine women on full-sized elk hides.
Her focus has most recently been on painting detailed wildlife on small leather medicine bags, has developed the website www.paintingwolf.com and has sold her work internationally.
She is excited to be working on yet another type of “canvas”, a full-sized wine barrel, and looks forward to displaying it in the near future.
