Joan Bourque has been painting, drawing and taking photographs since childhood. Her favorite visions are of water and reflective objects. As a graduate of Ohio Wesleyan University she apprenticed such fine New York artists as Chuck Close and Joe Zucker. She worked on large canvases as a super realist painter and showed in New York galleries from 1975 -1982. For the next fifteen years Joan lived and worked in the Caribbean as an underwater photographer and water colorist. Her images evolved to entertain children and ocean lovers. Many of these paintings were used in her children's book, Dreams of Dolphins Dancing. Today Joan works on and teaches many types of painting from recycled art to mandalas to murals.
STATEMENT
I enjoy finding the beauty in all living creatures. Our environment is an endless source of entertainment for me. The ocean itself is a giant painting of which I never tire. Water and other reflective objects like glass and metal allow me to experiment with the abstract qualities of ultra realism. Making large paintings like murals allows small abstract shapes and images to emerge and create a life of their own. My life is not about art, it's about living creativity.
