Meet the Artist - Joe McWilliams

Who is the Alcantara Green Man?

The Green Man has been peeking out at us through the foliage for over 4,000 years. He has a face that is made entirely of leaves and his leaves change color depending on the season he belongs to and from these can sprout branches and other vegetation.

He is a recurring the me who appears in folklore and architecture, adorning churches, cathedrals, and tombs throughout Europe. He is the god of the forest, a nature spirit. he is the Green Knight in the Arthurian story of Sir Gawain, and is the mideval Wild Man who dressed in leaves and lived in the forest, venturing out only to take food.

He is an expression of the natural cycle of life. From birth, to life, death, and decay back to the soil, to food from the soil, back into life- a symbol of the continuous regeneration of life and the interdependence of all things.

This version of the Green Man was created by artist Smokin' Joe for Alcantara Vineyards' annual Harvest Festival in Verde Valley, Arizona. Smokin' Joe lives in and travels the American Southwest, drawing inspiration for paintings and sculptures from its mystic energies and majestic landscapes.
